چکیده

Superpositions of different statistics on different time or spatial scales (in short, superstatistics) can naturally lead to an effective description by nonextensive statistical mechanics. We first discuss the role of escort distributions within the superstatistical framework, and then briefly describe recent physical applications of this concept to turbulent and patttern forming systems.

Superstatistics as the statistics of quasiequilibrium states: application to fully developed turbulence.

In nonequilibrium states, currents are produced by irreversible processes that take a system toward the equilibrium state, where the current vanishes. We demonstrate, in a general setting, that superstatistics arises when the system relaxes to a (stationary) quasiequilibrium state instead, where only the mean current vanishes because of fluctuations. In particular, we show that a current with g...

Generalized entropies and the transformation group of superstatistics

Superstatistics describes statistical systems that behave like superpositions of different inverse temperatures β, so that the probability distribution is pðεiÞ ∝ ∫ 0 fðβÞe−βεi dβ, where the “kernel” fðβÞ is nonnegative and normalized [∫ fðβÞdβ 1⁄4 1]. We discuss the relation between this distribution and the generalized entropic form S 1⁄4 ∑i sðpiÞ. The first three Shannon–Khinchin axioms are ...

Fe b 20 05 Coarse - grained distributions and superstatistics Pierre - Henri

We show an interesting connection between non-standard (non Boltzmannian) distribution functions arising in the theory of violent relaxation for collisionless stellar systems (Lynden-Bell 1967) and the notion of superstatistics recently introduced by Beck & Cohen (2003). The common link between these two theories is the emergence of coarse-grained distributions arising out of fine-grained distr...

Maximum entropy with fluctuating constraints The example of K-distributions

We indicate that in a maximum entropy setting, the thermodynamic β and the observation contraint are linked, so that fluctuations of the latter imposes fluctuations of the former. This gives an alternate viewpoint to ‘superstatistics’. While a Gamma model for fluctuations of the β parameter gives the so-called Tsallis distributions, we work out the case of a Gamma model for fluctuations of the ...

Stretched exponentials from superstatistics

Distributions exhibiting fat tails occur frequently in many different areas of science. A dynamical reason for fat tails can be a socalled superstatistics, where one has a superposition of local Gaussians whose variance fluctuates on a rather large spatio-temporal scale. After briefly reviewing this concept, we explore in more detail a class of superstatistics that hasn’t been subject of many i...
